Frequently asked questions.

About visiting the Big Island

  • The answer to this question really depends on where you’re staying and what it is you want to do while you’re here. You don’t absolutely have to have a car - land tours are a great way to see the island for those who choose to go without - but most visitors find it advantageous to have one. This is “The Big Island” after all.

  • When there is an active eruption or active lava flow - it is either at or in the vicinity of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which is located on the South end of the island, about 95 miles from Kona.

  • Lately, the volcano has been on again, off again, so the best answer I can give is, sometimes yes.. sometimes no.

For information on what is happening at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, I recommend visiting the USGS website at:

    https://www.usgs.gov/volcanoes/kilauea/science/eruption-information

or the National Park Service website at:

    https://www.nps.gov/havo/planyourvisit/lava2.htm

  • The big island has some amazing beaches. Many are on the Kohala Coast about 45 minutes North of Kona. The most popular of these is Hapuna Beach State Park. Boasting soft white sands and turquoise waters, it has been recognized as one of the best beaches in the US. There are a few smaller beaches closer to Kona, but Hapuna, in addition to being one of the most scenic beaches, is also one of the largest with plenty of parking and easy access.

  • Yes, you can book almost all of your tours and activities through My Kona Trip.

  • It is always a good idea to book your tours and activities in advance when possible. The main and perhaps most obvious reason for booking in advance is availability - the sooner you book, the better the availability will be. This is especially true if you are coming during peak season and/or if you are planning on doing more than one tour or activity while you are here.

  • The answer in most cases is, “No… transportation will not be provided.” In most cases you will have to provide your own transportation.

  • Almost all tours and activities that include meals are able to accommodate anyone who is vegan, vegetarian and/or gluten free, as well as anyone with food allergies provided enough notice is given. If you have dietary restrictions of any kind, it is best to book your tours and activities as far in advance as possible.

  • This will depend on the tour or activity. For snorkel tours: swimsuits and towels, for land tours: close-toed shoes, for helicopter tours: dark colored clothing. These are only a few examples. This information is usually provided in confirmation emails for the tours and activities you have booked, so be sure to read them carefully as they will provide most of the information you need, as well as answer many of the questions you have.

  • It’s okay to cancel provided you do so with enough notice. Be sure to read any confirmation emails you receive as these will include important information about the tour or activity, including the company’s cancellation policy. For a full refund, most companies require 24 or 48 hours advance notice. Cancellations made after that point may receive a partial or even no refund.
